Planting Party: November 14

- Donna Gleisner and Katrina Lindahl, N2N project coordinators

We need your help to plant about 100 small trees, shrubs, and vines along the sound walls. We need to get these replacement plants in the ground this fall so they can grow strong roots for next season. Because of the hot, dry summer we had, many neighbors graciously helped plants survive by watering. Thanks to them, we only lost 10% of the trees and shrubs we planted over the past year. The vast majority of the plants look fantastic! We will meet at the Kelly Hill Site (25th and Harrison Street). With many hands, this will be a fun, easy time! Contact Katrina Lindahl at 258-1126 for more information. Come join us and make a difference!

Where: 25th and Harrison Street
Time: 9:00am
Please bring your own shovel and gloves

Earth Day (Weekend) Planting was a Sunny Success!

- Donna Gleisner and Katrina Lindahl, N2N project coordinators

Thanks to 28 wonderful, caring Riverside neighbors, Kimberly-Clark employees and community service volunteers, our last Noise to Nature planting event along Highland Ave, State Ave and Chestnut Street was a great success. We were able to plant all 200 native trees and shrubs, and 75 Boston ivy plants along a three-block section of the freeway noise wall! Even the weather finally cooperated; it was a lovely warm, sunny day. THANK YOU Riverside Neighbors and Kimberly-Clark!!

The Everett Public Works Department’s Street Division was again of invaluable assistance. They had mowed where they could, dug out sections of buried sidewalk and closed off the streets for us and made sure we were safe. The Street Department also transported compost from our storage location to the site, brought hog fuel and topsoil, picked up all the big rocks and garbage we generated, and swept the street at the end of planting day. THANK YOU Mike and crew!

The Everett Parks and Recreation Department was also instrumental to our success. Even though their tool trailer was booked to another group, they found other wheelbarrows and shovels that we could borrow, and again lent us three picnic tables so we would have a place to sign people in, put breakfast snacks and lunches, and sit and eat. THANK YOU Craig and Dan!

Last, but certainly not least, the State Department of Corrections community service volunteers assisted us again by pre-digging all 200 planting holes that we had marked. They also dug out blackberries, thistle and other weeds that were marked with orange paint. THANK YOU Justin and crew!

Of course, none of this would have been possible without the funding for this project – a grant from the City of Everett’s Office of Neighborhoods, Neighborhood Project Fund. THANK YOU City of Everett for supporting your neighborhoods!

Summit Ave Planting was a TREE-mendous Success!

- Donna Gleisner and Katrina Lindahl, N2N project coordinators

Thanks to 25 wonderful, caring Riverside neighbors, including a few moms with kids, who showed up on a very windy and chilly Saturday, our planting party was a total success. We were able to plant 30 heavy street trees, 40 shrubs and 90 Boston ivy plants in about five hours! Talk about team work - WOW! Everyone had a helpful, positive attitude and was willing to stick with it until all the plants were in the ground. THANK YOU Riverside Neighbors near and far!!!

The Everett Public Works Department’s Street Division was again of invaluable assistance. They generously agreed to mow the two-block long strip, and used their equipment to pre-dig holes for all the street trees. They closed off the streets for us and made sure we were safe. The Street Department also transported compost from our storage location to the site, brought hog fuel and topsoil, picked up all the big rocks and garbage we generated, and swept the street at the end of planting day. THANK YOU Larry and crew!

The Everett Parks and Recreation Department was also instrumental to our success. They brought their tool trailer, which included buckets, gloves and safety vests, plus many wheelbarrows, and picnic tables so we would have a place to sign people in, put breakfast snacks and lunches, and sit and eat. THANK YOU Craig and Dan!

Last, but certainly not least, the State Department of Corrections community service volunteers assisted us again by pre-digging the other planting holes that we had previously measured and marked. They also chopped down and dug out thicket of blackberries, and other weeds that were marked with orange paint. THANK YOU Justin and crew!

West Summit Avenue to get Beau-TREE-fied
Saturday, March 7

- Katrina Lindal

After a brief hiatus from last fall’s successful planting of Kelly Hill, we are ready to continue planting the remaining open spaces along the resident side of the freeway sound wall in the Riverside Neighborhood.

First up is a two-block area on the west side of Summit Avenue, from 23rd street south to 25th street. On Saturday, March 7, from 9am to 2:30pm, we will be having a planting party there! Neighbors of all ages are welcome to join in the fun. Food and drinks will be provided, as well as tools and gloves.

We will be talking with neighbors on Summit Avenue to help us choose trees and shrubs to plant along this section of the sound wall. Our vision is to plant a diverse mix of evergreen and deciduous trees, shrubs and vines. Final plant choices will be decided with neighbor input.

The success of this planting depends on the care these plants will get for the next three years. We hope some of the folks who live across from this site will help us water the plantings during the summer for the next several years.

This is a great opportunity to have some family fun, get a little exercise, meet new neighbors and green up our Riverside Neighborhood.

Noise to Nature - Riverside is going green!

- Katrina Lindal

RNA has been awarded a $15,000 grant to reclaim six areas along the residential side of the freeway wall. Many mature native trees were removed when the walls were constructed and only a wildflower/grass mix was sown in their place.

Neighbors rallied together, wrote a proposal and are excited to re-plant these places with a mix of native trees and shrubs. These plantings will improve our air, reduce noise, beautify our neighborhood, increase our property values, and attract native birds and beneficial insects.

Kimberly-Clark offered to assist us in planting an area as part of their "Day of Caring" this fall. Employees helped us tackle the largest site we refer to as Kelly Hill at 25th and 26th streets and Harrison, (named after a nearby resident).

Volunteers added compost, then planted trees, shrubs, and various native plants, then spreaded mulch. Kimberly-Clark covered the cost for all the plants needed at this site, and provided lunches for all the volunteers on both Friday October 24 and Saturday October 25.

A BIG Thank you to Kimberly-Clark!
